In July 2026, Japan presented the outline of its Growth Strategy, identifying 17 strategic fields, including AI, semiconductors, digital and quantum technologies, among others, as well as 62 key products and technologies with the objective of strengthening Japanese economy.
One of the focuses of Japan’s Growth Strategy is the country’s long-term technological competitiveness. This involves, for instance, attracting lead investors, supporting high-level research capabilities and science and technology education, and encouraging start-up creation and growth.
At the same time, Europe is reinforcing its own semiconductor ecosystem through the proposed Chips Act 2.0, with a strong focus on advanced production and resilience, and aims to strengthen Europe’s technological sovereignty: https://lnkd.in/eG8j5RHZ
The plans announced by Japan and Europe open the door to exciting opportunities for deeper cooperation. By working together, both regions could, for instance, strengthen supply-chain resilience, accelerate R&D, and create new opportunities across the semiconductor value chain.
And some results to these initiatives have already started. In May 2026, the 4th EU-Japan Digital Partnership Council took place, at which both parties agreed to continue cooperating in the semiconductors, AI, quantum and digital infrastructure, among other sectors: https://lnkd.in/darY5FTR. In addition to this, at the end of July 2026, Japan also became the 23rd country associated with Horizon Europe, strengthening scientific partnerships between the two regions: https://lnkd.in/eZEZPkaK
JASMINE celebrates all these initiatives, which accelerate cooperation and innovation in the semiconductor field. By connecting the EU and Japan capabilities, technological advancements can be accelerated between these two regions, more resilient supply chains can be built and by identifying complementary capabilities, collaboration for future joint innovation opportunities can be facilitated.
